Every time I say Swap it Like it’s Hot it’s always to the beat of Snoop Dogg’s Drop it Like it’s Hot. And then it gets stuck in my head for the rest of the day. The lovely ladies who started this awesome group asked me to join them for round 4 of this fun challenge and of course I couldn’t say no. Any excuse to have fun with thrifting right?
SWAP IT LIKE IT’S HOT! : FALL TABLESCAPE
Here’s how it works: there are 40(!) of us participating and we each had to go thrifting for another person on the list. We got to spend around $10-$15 to pick out some of the best goodies we could find and send them off for a good thrift store makeover. This was actually the most challenging part of it all. Of course I wish I could send a piece of furniture or something larger, but the shipping would have been cray. So I had to get creative and send a bunch of smaller items.
Here’s what Jennifer from Town and Country Living sent me:
Yep that’s potpourri. My box arrived smelling like the most perfect combination of thrift store and yummy fall spices. I also got the cutest little wood coasters, which I was most excited about, a wooden leaf bowl, some striped placemats or napkins, and a shadow box type frame.
Honestly, I had no idea what I was going to do with all these items but I kept circling back around to a tablescape of sorts. I remembered I had some gold leaf lying around and thought I could use some of that on the wood pieces. I love the look of darker wood and gold, it’s such a classic combination.
STEP ONE:
I started with the little leaf bowl. I had the intention of gold leafing the whole thing. Terrible idea. I don’t know what I was thinking. And I didn’t have any gold leaf adhesive, so I just used Mod Podge. Which works…to an extent. But it takes forever to dry and I’m super impatient and the gold leaf was looking like crap.
I was hoping I could scrape it all off before it dried too much, which actually led to a very happy accident. It gave me this speckled gold leaf look that looked pretty sweet, so I rolled with it. Threw some of those little potpourri balls in there with some pinecones and called it a day.
STEP TWO:
For the coasters, I planned these out a little better. I knew I wanted to do a pattern of sorts with the gold leaf and decided on a simple triangle. So, I taped off my shape and spread a thin layer of mod podge on. I placed a sheet of gold leaf over top and pressed gently and let it dry.
Luckily, I had 8 of these, because again, I got impatient and took the gold leaf off before the glue was dry and I got uneven lines. It may have taken me a few tries to get it perfect 😉
STEP THREE:
For the frame, I wanted to try and use it as something other than what it was. Since I was going with a tablescape theme I decided to use it as my centerpiece. I had the hubs spray paint it white for me and then I just added some little bottles I tied ribbons around with some wheat in them. Is that wheat? I have no idea. I threw in some green apples for a little pop of color too.
STEP FOUR:
Last but not least I used the striped cloths as napkins, rolled them up and tied the same ribbon around them and added a sprig of the wheat.
And now we have a pretty little fall tablescape for our dining room table.

Love me some gold leaf! Although I was going to do a project soon with mod podge and now I’m rethinking it? Guess I’ll have to buy the real adhesive.
Love the diamond accent on the coasters. I got some in my wood fruit set and now I know what I can do with them 🙂

I could gold leaf everything! Mod Podge works, I feel like it just takes a little longer to dry and I’m super impatient 😉
Michelle from Weekend Craft

Your tablescape is beautiful! I think your coasters might be my favorite element – the geometric shape + gold leaf accent is beautiful!

Thrift store and fall spices sounds like the most heavenly scent ever. Maybe if we added a bit of coffee it would be my ideal! 😛 I LOVE how that bowl turned out!! The gold leaf flakes look prefect, yay for happy accidents!
Marie from The Interior Frugalista
Well aren’t you clever! The gold speckles on the leaf bowl really are a sweet oops. Adding green apples to the shadow box tray just makes your Fall vignette pop – love it. Your photos, once again, are beautiful Bre!
