One thing I really wanted to do this summer was put in a garden. We have plenty of room in our backyard and I dreamed of walking out and picking fresh veggies to cook dinner with. Buttt we got busy and just didn’t have time – plus I don’t think my black thumb would have been able to handle it anyway ha. I still wanted a little space where I could plant some herbs and veggies on a smaller scale so I teamed up with Crates & Pallet to create something perfect for us.
Modern Raised Crate Planter
I love how versatile their crates are and they have so many different sizes to choose from. Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

SUPPLIES FOR MODERN RAISED CRATE PLANTER
:: 2 large crates
:: 2 x 2 x 4s
:: wood glue
:: weed protective liner
:: nail gun
:: screws
:: stain
:: polyurethane
:: soil
:: herbs/veggies
First up, I used my go to wood glue to glue the two crates together.
As those are drying, you can start building your base. There are a bunch of different ways you could do this but after doing some research on my favorite modern planters I came up with this version.
You’ll need your 2 x 2s cut into these sizes:
4 at 26″ inches tall
2 at 12.5″ tall
1 at 17″ tall
It’s definitely a two person job to build the frame so make sure you have some help or a handy hubby around 😉 We used our nail gun first to secure the pieces of wood together and then went back in with some screws for extra support.
It’s easiest to stain the base and the crates separately and then you can put them together afterwards. We used Dark Walnut and then sealed them up with some polyurethane.
After that’s finished drying it’s time to line your crates so you can put the soil in. I went to the hardware store and explained my project and this was what they pointed me towards which ended up working perfectly.
I cut pieces out and used my staple gun to secure them to the insides of the crates making sure the top edge was nice and clean. Don’t worry so much about the inside since you won’t see that.
Then you can fill them up with soil and plant your herbs, veggies or flowers! I planted some basil, mint, baby tomatoes, banana peppers and cucumbers but you could put whatever you want in them.
They’d be super cute with plants in them too on a front porch. If you aren’t feeling crafty and would rather buy a planter, check out this round up of Large Outdoor Planters!
Fingers crossed I can keep all of this stuff alive!
