Thank you to Country Chic Paint for supplying the product for this project. All opinions and thoughts are 100% my own.
Remember when I picked this guy up a couple months ago? It’s finally done! He’s been chillin’ on the porch for a while now and it was time to give him some love. I haven’t done a dresser in a bit and it felt good to work on this one.
MID CENTURY TALLBOY PAINTED IN COUNTRY
CHIC’S HURRICANE
I picked it up at a garage sale when I went thrifting with my mom back home and we initially stopped because we saw an interesting table in their lawn.
They also had a big tent of items that they hadn’t brought out yet, so naturally I went snooping to see what I could find. My heart skipped a beat as soon as I walked in and saw this guy buried in the back behind various odds and ends. Jack.Pot.
I knew I wanted to go manly with it and originally planned on Navy. But then I got my goodies from Country Chic and couldn’t resist trying out their Hurricane color.
This dresser is super sturdy and in great condition and has the Bassett Furniture Industries stamp inside. I’ve never picked up a piece that was marked with this, but they’ve been around since the early 1900s and make some beautiful furniture!
The top is perfectly rectangular which I knew would be super easy to tape off and either stain or paint a different color. I wasn’t sure how the veneer would come off, but I really wanted to stain it; so, orbital sander in hand, I dived in. Luckily it came off great!
There’s just something therapeutic about sanding a piece and watching all the beautiful wood appear before your eyes 🙂 I used my fav stain (Dark Walnut) and sealed it up with some flat topcoat for the top as well as for the skinny panel across the bottom. Then painted the rest Hurricane.
I spray painted the bottom tips of the legs and the drawer pulls I bought all gold, but couldn’t resist some fun map knobs for the top drawer 🙂
This is the perfect Gray color if you’re looking for something with a hint of blue. And I just love the way it contrasts with the dark stain. And those skinny little legs make my heart smile 🙂
Do you have a favorite gray color that you like to use? I know I’ll be using this one again!
Have a fabulous day my friends!
Hilda
This is amazing!! I am super inspired to make over a baby son’s dresser! What is the brand name and color of the paint you used? Sorry if I missed that 🙂

Omg I have that exact bedroom set. It was my mom and dads set when I was a little girl. Have had it since early marriage and have always wanted to do something to it. I love it. I have had it for 39 years and it’s finally time. Was the limed oak finish easy to paint? That’s what’s been keeping me from doing it.

This dresser redo is amazing! I just bought a great dresser to redo for our newest additions nursery. Where did you find the gorgeous gold cup pulls?
brepurposed
Thank you so much Shonna! I got them from Hobby Lobby. They were originally more of a bronze color and I spray painted them gold 🙂

Ha ha, my girl friend had exactly the same dresser a few years ago, in Kingston, Ontario, not too far away. I wonder if its the same exact one somehow. We really appreciated the lines of it.

Love the makeover. Thanks for sharing.
Wonder if I could make a suggestion though. The wood background is stunning but the lovely grey font doesn’t show up against it, so can’t really read all if your blog.
Looking forward to reading more about your work.
brepurposed
Thanks Dee! I’ll look into adjusting the color so it’s easier to read 🙂

Impressive furniture revamped! This is absolutely an inspiring story to look up to. You just proved that having an elegant piece of furniture doesn’t have to be that most luxurious. A little paint and makeover will totally give your old piece a new accent. Good job!
brepurposed
Thank you so much Catherine! A little paint can totally go a long way 🙂
Ashley @ 3 Little Greenwoods

Andrea
What a beautiful piece of furniture , love that color and the Knobs, just stunning..I have to ask did you put the wax just on the top or all over …..thanks
brepurposed
Hi Andrea! I used General Finishes Flat Topcoat on the wood top and the Johnson’s Paste wax on the rest 🙂 Thank you!
Andrea
Thanks for your reply…I really like that piece…I just did a piece of furniture and I was wondering if Iam suppose to put the wax on it…so it’s best if you do right, just put it on with a brush , or what thanks…..
brepurposed
For the Johnson’s Paste Wax I just used an old T shirt 🙂 Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then buffed it off.
Tara @ Anything & Everything
This is gorgeous! Love the color! The map knobs are my favorite! Great job, Bre!
brepurposed
Thanks Tara! I love those knobs too 🙂
Stacy&Eric @ Anastasia Vintage
This is so great! The gray reminds me a lot of the grey we used on a bookcase we recently completed (http://anastasiavintagehome.blogspot.com/2014/09/shades-of-gray-part-2-retro-modern.html). Love the map knobs!
brepurposed
Thank you! And oh yes it does! What a unique bookcase that is!

Katie @ Little House of Four
Oh, I LOVE this one! The color is perfect (reminds me of my vintage server in my dinning toom) and those glboe knobs are really cute. I love that you decided to stain the top instead of painting it. Fansatic job my friend!
brepurposed
Thank you so much, Katie! I’m glad I decided to stain it too, I love the contrast against the gray 🙂
Amy @ Homey Oh My!
I was wondering how you’d be incorporating a hurricane into this project 😉
This dresser is the perfect mix of masculine and chic- it’s BEAUTIFUL. That is seriously one of the prettiest shades of gray I’ve ever seen, and those knobs! So charming!
brepurposed
haha it was the first thing that came to mind when I sat down to write this post. I’m in love with all of Country Chic’s colors that I’ve tried! Thanks for the kind words my friend 🙂
Erin
This is gorgeous! I have a very similar piece current sitting in our sun room that needs love. This is great inspiration to get me going on that project 🙂 xoxo
brepurposed
Thanks Erin!! I can’t wait to see what you do with yours 🙂
Kristi
I LOVE it Bre! That colour is so rich and with the dark stain, this dresser definitely has a classic, masculine feel. LOVE the gold accents and especially swooning over those super cute map knobs!!!
brepurposed
Thank you Kristi!! I’m definitely loving all the Country Chic colors I’ve tried so far! 🙂
Marie@The Interior Frugalista
Another gorgeous furniture makeover Bre! I have a brand new can of Hurricane sitting in the shop that I haven’t tried yet but that will soon change after seeing this. The color reminds me of denim. Minwax Dark Walnut is my favorite stain too – it just makes wood grain sing and compliments so many paint colors. Where did you find those adorable map knobs?
brepurposed
Thank you Marie!! You definitely need to get working with the Hurricane, it’s such a beautiful color. And yes it does kinda look like denim! I got the knobs from Hobby Lobby 🙂
Lindsay Eidahl
Your dresser turned out great! I love that color too! I did a dresser in that color and cut up an old leather belt to use as the handles. It is a great color!
brepurposed
Thank you Lindsay! Isn’t it a great color?! I remember that dresser you did and LOVED the pulls!
