Let the master bedroom progress continue! I feel like I’m on a roll and absolutely loving how this space is coming together. Next week I’ll be sharing a little sitting nook I’m working on that’s in front of the window. I just need to go get a new plant and then it will be ready to photograph 🙂 But today is all about rugs. We have wall to wall carpet in our home and even though it’s brand new, it’s kinda fugly. All I want in my life is hardwood floors. But they’ll just have to wait. So I knew I wanted a big area rug for under our bed to take the attention away from the carpet and I’m going to share 3 Tips to Finding the Perfect Rug for Your Bedroom.
Like any large piece of decor, you want to take your time before you make a decision. I think I browsed the Plush Rugs website for hours and hours before I finally decided on one. And I even changed my mind at the last minute, but I’m so glad I did. There are 3 important things you should keep in mind when trying to choose a new rug for your bedroom.
1 :: Texture
Texture can easily get overlooked when choosing a large area rug, but it’s one of the most important characteristics. Different textures in a room can create a beautiful layered look. I love the way shag rugs look, but after getting one for our living room and seeing the wear and tear it’s taken, I knew I wanted to steer clear of that for our bedroom. There’s nothing wrong with shag rugs, but just be prepared for a little more maintenance. Especially if you have pets. The rug in our living room is in a very high traffic area and that has definitely impacted it’s appearance. Even though bedrooms are typically less frequented, just keep in mind how big a pain in the butt it could be to have to vacuum or clean a large rug often, especially when half of it is under a heavy bed.
Texture is also important because it’s one of the first things you feel when you wake up in the morning. As soon as you get out of bed and your feet hit the floor, you want to be stepping on something soft and cozy. It might even still be dark out, if you’re an early riser, unlike myself 😉 You won’t care what your rug looks like then, just that it feels nice on your feet.
2 :: Color
Think about the color palette you’re using in your bedroom. It will even help to create a mood board and see how different rugs will look with your decor. It’s ok to go bold, but also keep in mind that you might change your bedding and decor down the road. Bedding is way easier to change out than a rug. I knew I wanted something pretty neutral but with a subtle pattern as well. The Blythe rug was perfect. It’s an off white color, which was exactly what I wanted. White rugs get dirty so fast and I didn’t want to have to worry about cleaning it all the time. The pattern isn’t too in your face either and I can still mix in some others in the rest of the decor.
A large area rug in a bedroom anchors the whole space and sets the tone for the rest of the decor. Make sure it’s a color you love and won’t get sick of, but also won’t clash with your other stuff. You want it to be something you can live with for a while and continue to decorate around.
3 :: Size
When it comes to rugs under beds, you want to make sure you don’t go too small. A good rule of thumb is to measure your bed and add 2 feet on either side (left & right) and that’s how wide your rug should be. The most common size for under a bed is 8×10 which is what we have. If you have a king size bed, you could easily use a larger size. You want to make sure the rug looks proportionate to the rest of your furniture and decor and is covering enough space outside of the bed to make an impact. There are also a few different placements to consider, and this will depend on the layout of your room. Typically, if you’re looking at your bed head on, the rug should be horizontal and start a foot or so in front of your nightstands.
I feel pretty good about my decision on this rug and think it’s going to be something we use for a long time.
